Christmas Decorations: The Pineapple

Wreaths of Colonial Williamsburg (Click pictures for larger views) Posted by Picasa
"The ornaments of our house are the friends who frequent it." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
More natural decorations found in Colonial Williamsburg. Here dried chili peppers, green apples, pomegranate, pine cones, dried goldenrod blooms, a variety of greenery and pineapple. Below the wreath emphasizes the pineapple with one lone osage orange or hedge apple.

Legend of the Pineapple
The Pineapple is a traditional American symbol of hospitality. When colonial sea captains returned from their tropical voyages, they would take pineapples from their cargo and hang them on their front door or gate post as a sign of welcome and hospitality. Later, people began carving pineapple designs into doorways and gate posts. Pineapples are still given today as a symbol of welcome or friendship.

Some houses are adorned with sprays rather than wreaths. Still with a bright mixture of colors and textures, each unique. My camera's battery ran down before the subject matter ran out.
