Shadows In Time

Sunlight and shadows. University of the South. Sewanee, Tennessee. Posted by Picasa

"In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don't." ~ Blaise Pascal
Old stones, rough hewn and set in the gothic style. Narrow and tall arches with swinging lantern lights. The campus of University of the South is very beautiful, resembling the buildings seen in Oxford and other universities of England. It has to be one of the most remote universities in the United States, set on top of a mountain in southeastern Tennessee, halfway between Chattanooga and Nashville. It is a 25 minute drive down a winding mountain road to the nearest Walmart. The small Piggly-Wiggly grocery store closes by 8 pm on most days. You really DO need to be able to commune with nature, all the time, to go there.

Nyssa did her first year in college here, before transferring to William and Mary. It was a long and trying year. She had a goal.. to get to William and Mary... and she worked hard to make it happen. I think this school is lovely and perfect for some people...but, it just wasn't perfect for her. I will say that someone could walk through these shadows, under the arches and out into the sun and be completely lost in time and space.

It's a terrific photo and it looks very much like Duke U.

Well, you could have knocked me over when I read the caption that this picture is a university!! I was thinking an old monestery, some kind of castle or battlement, large old church. Oh, it would scare me half to death to go there! I have a bad fear of windy raods and heights. But what an interesting place to find out about, I had never heard of it!

Fantastic shadow shot, I too thought that it was a monastery.

Stunning shot. I love it.
I just love old buildings and churches and have to say I thought it was a Church. Still, it is old and beautful and full of character and I am sure more shadows.

before i got to the title of the post, just looking at the photo, my first thought in my head was hallowed halls, then I saw it is a university. it is beautiful and I like the shadows and would like to walk through and out into the sunlight.

Hello, I'm Regina..came over from Ginny's blog. This is a beautiful image! Sounds like an intriguing drive where I can imagie as you mentioned- you'd have to commune with nature! I really like that quote and good to know the work paid off!
Now I don't always read comments but noticed yours in regard to the MS. An in-law (who happens to be in her 90's) got rid of her MS drinking apple cider vinegar, honey and water. She swears by it and no longer needed a cane (though she does use one now due to her age). Anyway..this was a woman who enjoyed jello and spam (lol)..not overweight but didn't really have a healthy diet. Just thought I'd share (you can easily get the exact recipe by googling).
My best, Regina

What a GORGEOUS Perfect Picture!  Truly amazing! It looks like a painting!  Interesting about that school...It sounds like a difficult place to be.  I'm glad Nyssa was able to go to William & Mary!
Thanks for your sweet words, my dear....And Yes...I need to get back to that series...There is still more of The Tile House!

I'm glad that you daughter found a good fit as that is so important.... Oddly enough when I saw the photo I thought of Oxford as I remember walking around when I was a child with my sister and parents. We were there when my Mother was working on her Ph.D...sadly she didn't finish it, but wonderful that she tried.....

The photo has all my favorite combinations, light and shadow, pathways, and doorways within doorways.  It's a perfect metaphor for the soul's journey through life and like a dream snapshot.
