Tombigbee River, Columbus, Mississippi. (Click picture for larger view)

"A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature." ~ Henry David ThoreauThe road leads to a favorite park and boating area on "the river"; runs past a low-lying stretch with water on both sides, prone to flooding. This is one of several swamps at the edge of the Tombigbee; and water snakes were common travelers. It was November; dark, damp and rainy. I was here to move the last of the furniture and sign the sales papers on the house and to visit places I knew for fifteen years, one last time. I love the somber look, the clouds, the dead tree skeleton along the bank; they matched my mood.
