Modern Technology

Modern technology strikes again! (Click picture for larger view) Posted by Picasa
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." ~ Arthur C. Clarke (English Writer of science fiction, b.1917)
"In this era of technology, it is becoming increasingly difficult to lead peaceful lives." ~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba
There is always a better cell phone, TV, computer, camera, printer, iPod... you name it. Sometimes I have to remind Nyssa that even she can remember a time before cell phones. Mom here on the other hand can remember a world before the space shuttle and moon landings; when color TV was for the rich and not the masses and when AM radio was all the craze. Computers filled entire rooms and punch cards did the programming; the pocket calculator didn't exist, car doors didn't open at the push of a button and to find directions to a destination, you deciphered a map at home before the trip not on a computer screen in the car. I remember cars without airbags and radial tires and front wheel drive. I was a doctor before there were MRI scans and PET scans and mammograms; before automated immunoperoxidase stainers and liquid-based PAP smears and any hint of clinically useful DNA analysis. Sometimes it seems that technology has exploded and grown more in the past 20 years than in all time previous; and we humans are left trying to catch up.
