I May Be Small

Asian Tiger Mosquito - Aedes albopictus Posted by Picasa

This macro shot was taken in Virginia Beach two days ago. All the rain has really been a boon to the mosquito population. Yes, this is my wrist and yes, this was the last supper of the condemned. As soon as I knew the shot was acceptable, this fellow (or lady) was smashed. Pesky creatures, this specific species was introduced to the US from Asia in the 1980's and are vicious biters, as evidenced by new bites on my arms and hands almost daily. If you have ever been annoyed by the buzzing in and around your ear at night when these little insects invade your room, they seem like giant insects from a science fiction movie.

Submission for Thursday Challenge topic "small". (end of post)
